•   Varied experience
The Essex Building Company was founded in 1981. In the early years we were involved with many restoration and renovation projects in Marblehead and Salem. These projects varied from restoring First Period houses to renovating Georgian, Federal and Victorian mansions. Some of these building were kept as single family homes and some were converted to condominiums

This first decade included building a new 3000 sf Victorian reproduction in Marblehead’s historic district which garnered a national award as one of Builder Magazine’s “Top 10 custom homes of 1989.”

Our second decade saw a continuation of period restorations but also included several 6000+ sf renovations on Marblehead Neck, as well as building several new homes in the area.

Since 2000 we have been involved in building five new houses as well as extensive renovations on five large historic houses. All of these projects have been in the
5000 sf – 8500 sf range. Interspersed with the larger projects, we are always able to do smaller projects for our clients.

•   Project Management Style
Unlike the larger companies in the area, we take on only one large project at a time which allows our clients to enjoy the personal supervision of our owner, David Clarke. David serves as the project manager for the job and each job has a lead carpenter who works on the project through framing and rough carpentry, up until the finish carpentry is completed. The personal attention from our two most experienced carpenters guarantees that our clients are always in close contact with key players. We like to have weekly meetings with architect, owner and building team.

•   Attention to Detail
One of the challenges for homes on the New England coast is our extreme weather. Using our depth of experience building in many different forms- stone, stucco and wood, we are able to constantly improve our building techniques to provide the best, most durable and weather-tight house possible for our clients.
We are also renowned for our outstanding finish carpentry, we have created paneled rooms, coffered ceilings, ornate mantles, curved stairways and many other expressions of fine craftsmanship.

•   Cost Control
We have refined our own software so that we can provide weekly financial updates to our clients and have integrated QuickBooks into our own spreadsheet so that our clients can see the financial health of their job. Financial transparency is one of the building blocks of a healthy client-builder relationship.

•   Relationships
One of the advantages of building in this area for over 30 years is the network of competent professionals which we have gathered together. Because of the loyalty of our subcontractors, we are rarely delayed by waiting for a critical piece in the construction process. These long-term relationships with our subs assure our clients of continued care of their homes.
